An education that acquaints an artist with the elementary principles of design and the technology of photography, and then offers a quick look at the long history of art and a somewhat closer look at modern art and some of the major photographers, may be fine for the sophisticated amateur; for the artist, it is no education at all.

One wonders how many of the artists in this show have a really encyclopedic knowledge even of the twentieth century —a knowledge not labored and pedantic, but personal and enthusiastic.

The world of the photographic artist should encompass the varied, intermingled possibilities of constructivist, supremacist, neo-plastic, futurist, surrealist, cubist, neo-classic models of structure and meaning as much as the world of the astronomer should comprise the varied experiments, calculations, equations, theories relating to the universe.

The possibilities of photography, like the possibilities of any art, are as great or as small as the visions of artists. The great ones, like Walker Evans, see the past in a totally new way, and remake it for all of us after their own vision. For those artists who live in the shadows of greatness and toil for smaller visions, success will depend on having the courage to accept limitations and carve out a small, yet unique, private world.
